Historic B-Ranch
Point Reyes National Seashore
For years, I drove past this barn on the way to Point Reyes. I loved its rustic, imperfect nature: the not-quite symmetrical shape, the colors of the wood planks and the rusting metal fixtures.
Sadly, this barn blew down in a violent wind storm in December of 2019. I feel extraordinarily fortunate, not only to have made this photograph (and Hay Barn), but to have done so on 8x10" transparency film, so the details are preserved and can be enjoyed for years to come, even though this beautiful, historic structure is gone.
I spoke with a farm hand after the barn fell. He shared that it was over 100-years old and was constructed with traditional joinery and no metal fasteners like bolts or nails. Amazing.
This image was made later in the evening, after the sun was below the horizon. The Fujifilm Velvia helped me capture these beautiful violets and magentas in the sky to contrast the green fields in the background.
