Early in the morning, before the sun rose, I clambered out of my sleeping bag in my simple room at the West Point Inn on the southern side of Mt. Tam. I pulled on thermal underwear, my clothes over that, put on a wool cap, a headlamp, and ventured out into the cold, brisk air. The sun on the eastern horizon appeared first as a faint glow, but as it rose the sky turned from black to a wonderful dark blue. I had with me the old 35mm film SLR that I bought from my father in high school, a tripod and a shutter release cable, all of which facilitated the capture of this image.
